Most creatures bare their teeth when hostile. But for apes, there’s another thing to keep in mind: they hate getting wet.
Chimpanzees seeking to gain social status will often wade into rivers and challenge their rivals to follow after; regardless of the result, the first Chimp ends up looking better due to his bravery and audacity.
That chimpanzee was literally challenging the cameraman to get wet.
Bonus fact: They hate swimming because they have such low body fat percentage they sink like a stone. That is pure muscle.
